Prophet Muhammad: Black Or White?

The physical matter of the Prophet Muhammad has been the concern of the Ulama. Among them, slipped this discussion in the hadith books. Others explained it in a separate book.

The Imam of Tirmidhi included the Ulama who wrote this discussion in a separate book entitled Ash-Syamil al-Muhammadiyyah which was the first book on this issue. In it, the author explains the physical characteristics and noble character of the Prophet Muhammad and other discussions about him.

Anas bin Malik said: “The Prophet (stature) was not too tall, nor short, not very white (skin) nor brown. His hair was not curly thick, nor was it straight in line. Allah Almighty sent him at the age of forty. He lived in Mecca for ten years and in Medina for thirteen years. Allah Almighty blessed him at the age of sixty, and his gray hair did not reach twenty in his head or beard. ”

Anas also said: “The Prophet has a moderate posture, not high or short, and is physically good. His hair is not curly nor is it straight. The color (the skin) is brownish, if he walks, walks upright. ”

Barâ` bin ‘Azib said:” The Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam was a man with curly hair, medium body, wide shoulder, thick hair to ear lobes and he was wearing a red cloth. I’ve never seen someone who is more handsome than him. ”

In another narrative, Bara’ said: “I have never seen anyone wearing a red cloth more handsome from the Prophet sallallaahu‘ alaihi wa sallam. He has hair sticking out to his shoulder. His shoulder was wide and he was not a person who was short, or too tall. ”

‘Ali bin Abi Thalib described:” The Prophet was not a tall person, nor was he a short person. His hands and feet are thick. His head is big. Big bones. Long chest hair. If walking, he walks upright like someone who is walking down a road. I have never seen anyone like him before or after. ”

Jābir said: “I saw the Messenger of Allah in the full moon, he wore a red cloth. I began to look at him and the moon, it turned out he was more beautiful than the moon

Abu Ishaq  said: “There was a man asking Bara bin Azib:” Is the face of the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam like a sword?” He replied: No, but like the moon.

Abu Hurairah said: “The Prophet was white like silver plated, his hair was rather wavy / curly”

Abu Ath-Thufail said: “I saw the Prophet sallallaahu‘ alaihi wa sallam. No one is left on this earth who has seen the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam besides me”. “He is white, handsome (with moderate stature)”

Anas bin Malik anhu said: “The hair of the Prophet sallallaahu‘ alaihi wa sallam reached the middle or (in another history: the middle) of his ears ”

Aisha said:” I bathed with the Messenger of Allah from one vessel. He has hair that reaches his shoulders and (also) to the ear lobe.”

Anas narrates the skin of the Prophet:

وليس بالأبيض الأمهق وليس بالآدم

“He is not skinny very white and is not very brown.” (HR Bukhari)

What is meant by the above statement is that his skin did not look very pale without any mixture of red and without light as marble. The skin of the Prophet’s skin is mixed with redness as mentioned in other narratives. This is what is meant in Sahih Muslim,

“Rasulullah SAW has a white skin shining.” (HR Muslim)

“He is white and beautiful in his face.” (HR Muslim)

What is meant by white in these narratives is the reddish white. Sometimes this skin by the Arabs is called asmar which means chocolate. In fact, what is meant is reddish white. Anas said:

“Rasulullah SAW has a brown leather color.” (HR Ahmad)

This conclusion is reinforced by the narrations that his skin is white, but tends to brown. Some also say that his skin is red, but tends to white. This indicates that the brown leather is meant in the narratives is red mixed with white. There is something that is meant by the saying of a friend who says the white-skinned Rasulullah SAW is a reddish white. The skin of the Prophet (pbuh) is the most important skin color among humans.

This is part of the physical characteristics of the Prophet who was narrated by the Companions. We must believe that the Prophet (peace be upon him) had perfection in his physical form.

Scholars say, anyone who says that the Prophet is black, or not including the Quraysh, then he has disbelieved. Dictating him in addition to his nature, is the same as denying his existence or denying it. Some other scholars say that the person who describes him SAW with a character that indicates the shortage of the Prophet SAW like black or other, then he has become kafir (infidel)

Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu aih alaihi wa sallama was the most beautiful person of his physical appearance and most perfect in personality.

Anas said:

He is the most generous, most handsome and most courageous person [Al-Bukhâri and Muslim]…

Anas said:

Rasulullah is the best moral person [HR. Muslim]

Aisha said:

His moral is al-Qur’an [Al-Bukhâri and Muslim]

The Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu aih alaihi wasallam was a perfect human being. The beauty of his personality is directly proportional to the physical beauty of his body. His face was very handsome beyond any human good looks, even compared to Prophet Yusuf.

Al-Syaikh al-Imam al-Bushiri in his legendary Sya’ir, al-Burdah said:

فَهُوَ الَّذِيْ تَمَّ مَعْنَاهُ وَصُوْرَتُهُ * ثُمَّ اصْطَفَاهُ حَبِيْباً بَارِئُ النَّسَمِ

مُنَزَّهٌ عَنْ شَرِيْكٍ فِيْ مَحَاسِنِهِ * فَجَوْهَرُ الْحُسْنِ فِيْهِ غَيْرُ مُنْقَسِمِ

“He (Muhammad sallallaahu aih alaihi wasallam) was perfect in his personality and appearance. Allah the Almighty creator chose him as a lover. Its beauty is nothing that can match. The beauty in his figure is not shared with others “.

The Prophet’s stature was being, not too short, nor too high. His hair is wavy curls, not curly and not straight stiff. His body was stocky not too fat, his chin was not sharp. His face with a rather round shape is the most handsome among humans in the universe. His skin is reddish white.

His eyes were pitch black. the two lashes are not sticking together, so they look perfectly beautiful. He often looks down rather than up, describing a very humble figure

His head and forehead are wide. Pointed nose. His mouth is wide and fragrant. His teeth are tenuous. When speaking, there appeared to be a radiating light between the two teeth. His cheeks are wide and don’t appear to stick out his bones. His neck is like a beautiful, beautiful painting, clear as silver.

His shoulders are wide. Its thick fur extends from the chest to the center. The palms and feet are thick and smooth. The pace is fast and robust. When he turned around, his whole body turned around, showing a person who respected anyone. Between his shoulders are khatam al-nubuwwah (prophetic sign). His personality is very gentle and friendly.

His figure is so authoritative. People who see him, will certainly immediately respect him, even though it was the first time he saw him. Whoever gathered and recognized him, he would love him.

His sweat is pure white, shiny like a pearl. The smell is so fragrant that Umm Sulaim makes it as a perfume. Really I swear there is no perfume that is more fragrant than his sweat. So said Ummul Sulaim.

Al-Hafizh al-raIraqi said:

“Anyone who describes his figure must have said,” I have never seen a person as perfect as the Messenger of Allah. ”
